Fuiava sets discus record in Washington State win

Silverdale, WASHINGTON — Silverdale, Washington has its own Throwin’ Samoan now in Central Kitsap High School sophomore Ho'oponokauilani Fuiava. “I feel great,” said Fuiava, who is half Samoan, half Hawaiian. “That’s all I wanted was to hit 140.”

Known better by her nickname, Pono, Fuiava set a new West Sound record in girls discus Thursday with a throw of 146 feet, 1 inch in the Class 3A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, Washington.

She is the daughter of Fogatiamaali’i Situe, Jr. (Aunu’u & Fagaalu) & Mele Pa’aga Fuiava (Nu’uuli ). Grandparents are Pastor Pulemau & Veronica Pa’aga (Nuuuli) and To’atautali Situe, Sr. & Fa’atoa Fuiava (Alao & Aunu’u) and a daughter of Masausi & Ofu, Manu’a as well as Peteli Academy.

Pono is pictured with her coach Bill Braun. They are all smiles after Fuiava won the girls Class 3A state discus title last Thursday.
