110 Hawaii-based soldiers to be deployed to Egypt

HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii Army National Guard unit with soldiers based on the Big Island and Kauai will be deployed for a year to support a multinational group in Egypt.

A total of 110 soldiers from Charlie Troop in Kauai, and Headquarters and Headquarters Troop from Hilo will be assisting the Multinational Force & Observers Group, an independent organization charged with implementing the security provisions of the Egyptian-Israeli Treaty of Peace.

All soldiers are part of the 1st Squadron, 299th Cavalry Regiment.

This is the fourth time the unit will be deployed. The other deployments were to: Vietnam in 1968, Iraq in 2004, Kuwait in 2008.

According to the news release, there are both first-time deployers and multi-deployers among those based in Hilo.

The 1-299th soldiers will be training in Fort Bliss, Texas, for about a month before heading to Egypt.
