Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB) of the Department of Public Safety is currently conducting an investigation in response to a reported assault involving three inmates at the Territorial Correctional Facility.
The alleged assault occurred on August 11, 2025.
This investigation seeks to elucidate the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and ensure accountability for any potential misconduct.
Deputy Police Commissioner Falana’ipupu Ta’ase Sagapolutele confirmed the initiation of this investigation during a recent interview with Samoa News. He noted that the inquiry was officially commenced on Tuesday, following a formal request from the Attorney General's office to conduct a detailed examination of the assault claims.
“As this investigation is still in its preliminary phases, we are prioritizing the integrity of the process. At this juncture, I am unable to provide additional specifics,” stated the Deputy Commissioner, underscoring the necessity of a thorough and impartial investigation to uphold the standards of justice within the correctional system.
An official of the Department of Corrections, who is not authorized to speak with the media, informed Samoa News that currently, only one inmate from the Territorial Correctional Facility (TCF) is receiving treatment at LBJ Hospital.
The official elaborated that three inmates were reportedly attacked by fellow inmates within the correctional facility. Among these individuals, one inmate sustained significant injuries and remains under medical care at the hospital, while the other two received treatment for their injuries and have since been reintegrated into the custody of the Department of Corrections.
The official further disclosed that the violent incidents transpired in early August, and the hospitalized inmate is experiencing serious health complications due to the severity of the physical assault he endured. The Department of Corrections is actively monitoring the situation and has refrained from disclosing further details regarding the circumstances that led to the assaults.
