Governor Pulaali'i hosts informational briefing on community health efforts

UTULEI, American Samoa — On Monday, August 25, 2025, Governor Pulaali'i Nikolao Pula, together with the Office of Samoan Affairs, convened an informational briefing at the Lee Auditorium. The session brought together key stakeholders, including Samoan Affairs leadership, village mayors, traditional leaders, Cabinet members, the Department of Health, LBJ Hospital, and the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS-EPA).

The briefing provided important updates on the Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) Medical Mission, which continues to deliver vital health services to the people of American Samoa. As of August 24, more than 3,400 patients have been seen, with treatment values exceeding $866,000 in dental, optometry, women's health, preventative care, and general medical services.

The discussion also highlighted the ongoing value of IRT missions in expanding healthcare access, providing a wide range of medical services, and supporting community wellness initiatives such as diabetes and hypertension management, preventative health education, and women's health.

The Department of Health provided an update on the ongoing dengue fever outbreak at the time — reporting 66 cases as of August 20, 2025. DOH emphasized early detection, clinical preparedness, and ongoing community education.

AS-EPA shared progress on their island-wide clean-up efforts to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, including the removal of more than 170 loads of scrap vehicles, appliances, and other waste from high-risk areas.
