Cardinal Soane Patita Mafi presides over local Catholic celebrations

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Catholic Diocese of Pago Pago had the honor of welcoming this week, His Eminence Cardinal Soane Patita Paini Mafi of the Diocese of Tonga and Niue. 

Cardinal Mafi is a distinguished figure in the Catholic Church, being the first cardinal from Tonga. Born on December 19, 1961, he was ordained as a priest in 1991 and has since dedicated his life to serving the Church and his community with great devotion and humility.

He was appointed as Bishop of Tonga in 2008, and in 2015, Pope Francis elevated him to the College of Cardinals, making him the youngest cardinal at the time. Cardinal Mafi is known for his compassionate leadership and commitment to addressing issues such as climate change, which significantly impacts his Pacific island nation. His efforts extend beyond spiritual leadership, as he actively engages with global forums to advocate for the needs and rights of his people.

Upon his arrival at the airport, he was greeted by Most Reverend Bishop Kolio Etuale, Diocese Chairman Faiivae Godinet, the Catholic Tongan Community, and the Diocese VIP Committee. The warm reception highlighted the deep respect and admiration the community holds for Cardinal Mafi, reflecting his significant influence and cherished presence within the Church and beyond.

On Monday, August 4, 2025, His Eminence Cardinal presided over the Liturgical Mass celebrating the feast of St. John Vianney, patron saint for all priests and Blessings of the new renovations at the Fatu-o-Aiga Cathedral in Ottoville, Tafuna.

He served as the main celebrant at the Liturgical Mass commemorating the feast of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of all priests.

His Most Reverend Bishop Kolio Etuale assisted Cardinal Mafi during the service.

Following the Mass, a brief service took place to bless the newly completed St. John Vianney and St. Anne Conference Rooms, as well as the outdoor statue of the Holy Family. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of reverence and celebration as attendees gathered to witness the dedication of these significant spaces.
