Celebratory luncheon held for 8 distinguished CANOE scholars

The eight honorees and others

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. hosted a celebratory luncheon honoring eight exceptional students from American Samoa who recently returned from completing the 2025 Create and Navigate Opportunities in Education (CANOE) Summer Pre-Health Academy held in Oahu, Hawaii. The program is designed to empower and guide young leaders from underrepresented Pacific Island communities toward careers in healthcare and medicine.

During the academy, the eight honorees successfully completed college-level coursework in Health 123 at the University of Hawaii-West O'ahu, earning 3 academic credits and multiple nationally recognized certifications. Through skill-building labs, mentorship, and real-world clinical exposure, the program equipped participants with the foundational tools needed to enter the healthcare field.

The opening prayer was offered by Pastor Don Kruse (also ASG’s Treasurer), followed by heartfelt remarks from Acting Governor Pulumataala.

In his address, the Acting Governor commended the students for their courage, commitment, and resolve to be of service to the people of American Samoa. He emphasized the critical importance of cultivating the next generation of health professionals, especially during these challenging times when the demand for healthcare providers continues to rise across the territory.

Pulumataala also extended his sincere appreciation to the American Samoa Area Health Education Center (AHEC), its director and program coordinator, and the chairwoman of the board for their tireless efforts in providing transformative opportunities for the territory's youth.

Monica Afalava, Director of the American Samoa Area Health Education Center, delivered special remarks acknowledging the collaborative efforts and partnership among multiple organizations that contributed to making the opportunity a reality. During her remarks, she proudly highlighted the eight students who represented American Samoa in the 2025 CANOE Summer Pre-Health Academy.

Among them were three immigrant students whose participation highlighted the program's inclusive mission to empower diverse communities. Out of the 41 total program participants, two students from American Samoa were recognized as academic and leadership standouts, a testament to the territory's emerging talent in the health professions pipeline.

Director Afalava echoed a shared vision of inspiring future generations to uplift the health and wellness of the territory. She applauded the participants for representing American Samoa with pride and excellence.

The luncheon concluded with words from Dr. Robin Vasai, Chairwoman of the AHEC Advisory Board, who expressed gratitude to the Acting Governor and the American Samoa Government for their steadfast recognition of the students' achievements.

Dr. Vasai highlighted the urgent need to maintain and expand such programs amidst potential funding challenges.

The Create And Navigate Opportunities in Education Summer Academy continues to be a beacon of opportunity for aspiring healthcare professionals across the Pacific.

Congratulations CANOE Summer Academy Scholars and the American Samoa Area Health Education Center for the wonderful achievement!
