Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Commissioner of Public Safety Ta’aga Saite Moliga has publicly apologized on local television following the wrongful detention of a young man in Vaitogi earlier this month.

During the broadcast, he expressed deep regret for the incident, acknowledging the profound implications it had on both the individual affected and the community at large.

“Upholding justice and ensuring that such mistakes do not occur again, we are committed to conducting a thorough review of the procedures that led to the wrongful arrest.

“The department is dedicated to transparency and accountability, aiming to restore trust in the law enforcement system,” said the DPS Commissioner.

During an interview with KVKZ TV, Commissioner Ta’aga recounted a troubling incident involving a young man who was mistakenly identified as a suspect in a recent altercation.

The misunderstanding arose when a police officer, responding to a call in the Vaitogi area, believed the individual was responsible for hurling stones at a police vehicle.

The incident had led to an injury sustained by one of the officers on duty. After a thorough investigation, it became evident that the young man was not involved in the confrontation. Consequently, he was promptly released from police custody, underscoring the importance of careful identification in law enforcement, said Ta’aga.

The Commish reassured the public that once the thorough internal affairs investigation is finalized, the necessity of the actions taken by the involved police officers will be clearly determined.

“I want to place emphasis on the fact that whatever the outcome of the investigation, I will determine there, as to what the next action plan is.”

According to the Commissioner, this comprehensive review will meticulously examine all aspects of the incident, including witness statements, body camera footage, and departmental policies. Should any misconduct be identified during this rigorous process, appropriate accountability measures will be enacted to ensure justice is served. This will involve not only disciplinary actions, if warranted, but also a commitment to transparency throughout the process, reinforcing the integrity of the police force and fostering public trust in law enforcement.
