Feleti Barstow Library launches bookmobile at Matafao Elementary School

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Feleti Barstow Public Library launched its new Bookmobile during a special ceremony held at Matafao Elementary School on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Acting Territorial Librarian, Loring Faiivae, opened the ceremony by welcoming guests and highlighting the Bookmobile's launch as a major achievement for the Feleti Barstow Public Library.

He emphasized the Library's mission to promote information literacy across all communities in American Samoa by utilizing available resources to reach children where they are. Mr. Faiivae also announced an upcoming milestone, stating, "On April 17, 2025, on Flag Day, we will be celebrating 25 years of service by the Feleti Barstow Public Library to the people of American Samoa." He extended heartfelt appreciation to the Governor and First Lady for their continued support and strong advocacy for education, literacy, and lifelong learning.

After proclaiming National Library Week, April 6-12, 2025, in his special remarks, Governor Pulaali'i Nikolao Pula expressed his deep appreciation to the Feleti Barstow Public Library team, Department of Education, the dedicated educators, and especially the students who contributed to the significance of the event. Addressing the young learners directly, the Governor shared his excitement for the new Bookmobile, stating:

"This vehicle is essentially a library on wheels-designed to bring books directly to your villages and make learning more accessible. It will travel throughout all of American Samoa, supporting education and literacy in every community."

The Governor concluded by commending the Library's initiative and underscoring the importance of ensuring that all children across the Territory have access to quality learning opportunities through reading.

First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula had the honor of cutting the ceremonial ribbon, officially launching the Bookmobile into service. Following the ribbon-cutting, she and the Governor delighted students by reading a story together, engaging warmly with the children who listened attentively and with enthusiasm.
