Sweet Success at First Friday

SUGA MAMA

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — One of the standout vendors at the ASG Department of Parks and Recreation’s First Friday International Street Food Day was Suga Mama, a women-led, Aua-based small business known for its mouthwatering sweets and savory bakes. The name is a clever play on words—“sugar” for the irresistible treats, and “suga” (refers to a woman in Samoan) to honor the powerful female entrepreneurs behind it.

Owner Vatau Fanene (center) says events like First Friday allow small businesses like hers to truly connect with the community. “Some of my regulars from the west side were finally able to enjoy our treats here at Lions Park,” she shared at the April 4th event at Lions Park. Fanene sees First Friday as more than just a market—it's a platform for under-resourced entrepreneurs to grow, network, and support each other. “There’s so much Samoa has to offer. Not everyone can afford a physical store, so events like this help us provide for our families and even create jobs.”

From colorful shave ice to chocolate cake, peanut cookies, sushi bake, and enchilada bake, Suga Mama served up a feast of flavors. Through First Friday events, she’s built strong friendships with fellow vendors, many of whom share tips, encouragement, and opportunities for the next big event. “This is our way of giving back to the community,” Fanene says. “And I really support it.” You can catch them on the next Friday Friday on May 2, 2025 at Lions Park. Fanene is pictured with her sister Vaimagalo Danielson (left) and relative Tau Telea in front of their tent.
