Juneteenth Independence Day to be celebrated next week with holiday

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In a memorandum, dated June 12, 2024, Gov. Lemanu P.S. Mauga announces that “Juneteenth Independence Day, Wednesday, June 19, 2024 will be observed as a holiday in American Samoa.”

As per norm, all government offices will be closed and normal activities will be suspended on that day.

“Employees of the American Samoa Government who are not required to perform essential services shall be excused from their duties.

“Employees required to perform duties on that day will receive holiday wages in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.”

Governor Lemanu states that “Juneteenth Independence Day is a time to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

“I encourage you all to take time to remember our dark past and embrace the hope and progress that the present has brought us.

“We also honor all those who have died in pursuit of a more perfect union,” Lemanu concludes, thanking all for their hard work and dedication, and to have a “safe” holiday.
