WHO delegates visit LBJ Tropical Medical Center

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA —  The LBJ Tropical Medical Center (LBJTMC) welcomed delegates from the World Health Organization (WHO) on April 16, 2024, for an informative tour of American Samoa's sole healthcare institution. The delegation aimed to strengthen collaboration and assess healthcare infrastructure in the region.

Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, leads a distinguished group of individuals. Notably, Dr. Piukala holds the distinction of being the first Pacific Islander to attain a high-ranking position at the WHO Regional Office.

His credentials include graduating from the Fiji School of Medicine and holding both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Surgery. Dr. Piukala's professional trajectory, which spans from serving as a surgeon to holding the position of Minister of Health in Tonga, reflects an understanding of the quality of life of Pacific Islanders.

Accompanying Dr. Piukala were Dr. Kim Eva Dickson, Head of WHO and Representative for Samoa, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau, Ms.  Laura Davison, Executive Officer to the Regional Director & Coordinator, External Relations and Communications at WHO’s Western Pacific Regional Office, Mr. Taniela Sunia Soakai, Strategic Advisor to the WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, and Lepaitai Blanche Hansell, National Professional Officer, Communicable Diseases and Health Emergencies.

Their presence highlighted WHO's commitment to supporting healthcare systems and addressing public health challenges in the Pacific.

The tour provided an opportunity for WHO delegates to witness firsthand the vital role played by LBJ Tropical Medical Center in delivering healthcare services to the people of American Samoa. From facilities to dedicated medical professionals, the visit showcased the center's commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery
