Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — It was an eventful Friday evening, last week, at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) as the Teacher Education Department (TED) hosted its first Senior Night for all high school seniors and juniors for both public and private schools. It was an effort initiated by the ASCC-TED in collaboration with Student Services (Admissions and Financial Aid Office), the Lumana’i Educators’ Association (LEA), and Ammon Fepulea’i (ASCC Faculty/ Club Advisor) with The House of Flying Daggers (HOFD). The event took place at the ASCC Multipurpose Center.
The purpose of the event was not only to recruit high school students to ASCC, but to educate them on the opportunities they have at our local institution of higher learning. This was demonstrated through conversations and hands-on activities with staff, faculty and current students of ASCC.
Many of the students from the local high schools are not aware of the various programs ASCC has to offer, and part of ASCC-TED’s goal was to not only inform students of these programs, but that they can still receive a high quality education on island that would equip them with the skills and knowledge they need whether they choose to transition into the workforce after graduation or transfer to an off-island institution of higher learning.
The program began at 5pm with an opening prayer offered by Dr. Larry Purcell (TED Core Faculty), followed by opening remarks by the Master of Ceremonies, TED Chairperson, Dr. Feleni Alainu'uese.
To kick-off the program, three raffle prizes were drawn for lucky winners. Prizes consisted of Ace Hardware gift bags; phones and data packages provided by ASTCA, $20 meal certificates sponsored by Carl’s Jr. which also included movie tickets, $25 Gift Certificates sponsored by Cheat Day, and the final prize donated by GIAS, was a matching chair and desk set.
At check in, the students were assigned to five color-coded groups and there were a total of five booths. The featured booths were the ASCC Financial Aid Office, the ASCC Admissions office, House of Flying Daggers, Teaching Methods in Samoan Language & Culture and a STEAM station
