SPC MEETING

The American Samoa delegation to the Pacific Community (SPC took part in a productive meeting with the leadership team of the Pacific Community (SPC) on Day 2 of the meeting. SPC Director General, Dr. Stuart Minchin facilitated discussions focused on areas of potential collaboration between American Samoa and SPC, with both parties exploring avenues to address common challenges and advance shared goals within the Pacific region.

Deputy Director General, Dr. Paula Vivili, Senior Advisor Ms. Vuki Buadromo and Director of Strategy, Performance and Learning, Ms. Emily Sharp were also in attendance to provide insight in the key areas discussed.

The American Samoa delegation made up of key members representing various sectors (Public Health, Marine & Wildlife, Power, & the Environment) seized the opportunity to present their areas of expertise as it concerns the region. Through these presentations, they were better able to highlight the vast commonalities and need for greater collaboration in addressing issues effectively.

CENSUS REPORT

The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024 released the 2020 Island Areas Censuses Detailed Cross Tabulations for American Samoa.

The release includes 95 demographic, social, economic and housing characteristics tables. These characteristics are cross-tabulated by race, age, sex, place of birth, educational attainment, labor force status, occupation, industry, and income and earnings.

Housing characteristics are cross- tabulated by age of householder, household income in 2019, household size, tenure, units in structure, and year built. This final release of 2020 Island Areas Censuses data included the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on 2020 Island Areas Censuses.

While the 2020 Island Areas Censuses operation was successful, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the quality of the collected data on detailed social, economic and housing characteristics for American Samoa, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To ensure the Census Bureau’s high data quality standards are met, adjustments were made to data products reporting population and housing characteristics.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic impacting data collection efforts for group quarters facilities, American Samoa data tables reporting social and economic characteristics do not include the group quarters population in the table universe. As a result, impacted 2020 data tables should not be compared to 2010 and other past census data tables reporting the same characteristics.

Details of other aspects of the report in future issues.
