Traditional Samoan performing arts on display at Moso’oi Cultural Night

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The October Moso’oi Festivities held its inaugural Cultural Night this past Saturday evening Oct. 21, 2023, with, a competition between high schools showcasing traditional Samoan performing arts, singing, and cultural games.

Seven high schools from the territory participated, making it an unforgettable evening of talent and heritage. Schools competed in seven categories: Siva Mauluulu, Siva Sāsā, Siva Fa'ataupati, Contemporary Dance, Taupou Taualuga, Taupou Attire, and Uniform.

 “The vision of the Governor and I is to create opportunities like the Moso’oi Festivities, so generations of our people may celebrate, educate, revive, and preserve the Samoan culture. Everything we witness during these events is a legacy for the next generation,” Acting Gov Talauega E. V. Ale said in a press release issued yesterday by the Governor’s Office.

He commended the schools and participants for their spectacular performances, and extended his gratitude for their dedication. A special recognition was given to the Agency for Better Living Endeavors (ABLE) for all of their efforts. Acting Governor Talauega also encouraged the private sector and organizations to take part in hosting and sponsoring next year’s Mosooi festivities.

The results of the competition were as follows:

1st Place: Leone High School, also winning in all seven categories of the competition;

2nd Place: Nuuuli Vocational Tech. High School; and

3rd Place: Samoana High School

This cultural celebration was made possible through the joint efforts of ABLE (Agency for Better Living Endeavors), in collaboration with the American Samoa Governor's Office and the American Samoa Humanities Council.

The Moso’oi Festivities for October will conclude with the Miss Moso’oi Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, October 28, 2023.
