Flags at half-staff to honor late Public Defender David Peter Vargas

FLAGS AT HALF STAFF AT EOB

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A Requiem Mass was held for the late Pubic Defender and long time local attorney David Vargas on Wednesday, Oct 11, 2023, at the Holy Family Cathedral.

Yesterday Acting Governor Talauega E.V. Ale directed that the flags of the United States and American Samoa “shall be flown at half-staff from sunrise October 11, 2023 until sunset October 12, 2023” as a symbol of reverence and a testament to the respect and gratitude the government holds for Vargas, who passed away on September 12, 2023 at the age of 77.

“Vargas's unwavering commitment to our Territory is illuminated by his many years of dedicated legal service. He faithfully and diligently served our Territory, leaving an exemplary legacy of invaluable contributions. His devotion to the welfare of our people will forever remain etched in our hearts,” Talauega said in a statement released yesterday.

“As we lower our flags to half-staff, may this solemn act stand as a perpetual symbol, reminding us of the deep sense of appreciation we owe not just to David Vargas but to all the exceptional leaders who have helped preserve the tenets and ideals of our justice system.”
