Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata, a Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement condemning the attacks against Israel.
“I’ve had the great joy to visit Israel and to see Jerusalem, an important and historic site to people of faith all over the world. The people of Israel are enduring sudden brutal attacks, loss of life, and destruction. We must stand together in fully condemning this lawless violence, and insisting internationally that Hamas stops this attack without delay. The people of Israel should not have to face the threat of rockets, explosions and indiscriminate killing.
“The State of Israel is a dependable friend to the United States, and an allied democracy in an important region of the world. I’ve met with Prime Minister Netanyahu, and been briefed on Israel’s security, and there is great respect for the capabilities of the Israel Defense Forces. Our prayers and thoughts, as well as our nation’s diplomatic efforts and strong support, are with the people of Israel in this time.”
This comes as Assocated Press is reporting that Israel vows to punsh Gaza as region and world feel ripples from the Hamas attack.
Israel’s military ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip on Monday, halting deliveries of food, fuel and supplies to its 2.3 million people as it pounded the Hamas-ruled territory with waves of airstrikes in retaliation for the militants’ bloody weekend incursion.
More than two days after Hamas launched its surprise attack, the Israeli military said it had largely gained control in its southern towns where it had been battling Hamas gunmen.
Israel’s vaunted military and intelligence apparatus was caught completely off guard by Hamas, resulting in heavy battles in its streets for the first time in decades.
