Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — While Gov. Lemanu P. S. Mauga and the ASG contingent are in Hawaii, depending on the availability of Governor Green, they are planning to officially present American Samoa’s fundraising efforts for Maui, according to Loa Tauapai Laupola, the Governor’s Chief of Staff.
“We are are tentatively planning on Friday or Monday of next week,” he said in an email to media. “The total donation will be $500K to include the Hawaii donation.”
ASG finished up the Humanitarian Relief fundraiser for the people of Lahaina, Maui on Saturday, September 9, 2023. Proceeds from the Drive, which ran from September 4- 9, netted $500,000, according to a government press release, dated Sept. 12.
In the press release issued by the Governor’s Office, Senator President Tuaolo M. Fruean, reflected on the fundraiser, saying, "In times of adversity, it's inspiring to witness the strength of our community.
“Together, we've not only met, but exceeded our goal, showing that when we unite with compassion, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing hardship.
"Today, I'm honored to announce that the Legislature's donation stands at $10,000,” Tuaolo said.
According to the press release, ASG Treasurer Malemo Tausaga revealed during the closing ceremony of the Relief effort that an unofficial total amount of $243,861 had been generously donated by the community during the fundraiser and also announced that ASG would contribute an additional $256,139, resulting in a total donation of $500,000.
The Consul General of the Independent State of Samoa Fata K. Brian also made a generous donation during the relief effort.
