Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — ASG finished up the Humanitarian Relief fundraiser for the people of Lahaina, Maui on Saturday, September 9, 2023 with a closing ceremony. Proceeds from the Drive, which ran from September 4- 9, will provide much-needed support to the families on Maui after the week-long event netted $500,000.
Senator President Tuaolo M. Fruean, reflecting on the fundraiser, said, "In times of adversity, it's inspiring to witness the strength of our community. Together, we've not only met, but exceeded our goal, showing that when we unite with compassion, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing hardship.
"Today, I'm honored to announce that the Legislature's donation stands at $10,000,” Tuaolo said, who along with Paramount Chief Mauga Tasi Asuega delivered special remarks.
During the ceremony, ASG Treasurer Malemo Tausaga revealed that an unofficial total amount of $243,861 had been generously donated by the community during the fundraiser and also announced that ASG would contribute an additional $256,139, resulting in a total donation of $500,000.
This substantial contribution will go a long way in assisting the families in need in Lahaina, Maui, and exemplifies the compassion and unity of the American Samoa community, it said in a press release issued by the Governor’s Office.
As part of the closing ceremony, a prayer service was conducted by Reverend Elder Tusi Seanoa of the CCCAS Petesa Uta, accompanied by hymns performed by the choir.
ASG leaders attending included: Gov Lemanu P. S. Mauga, Lt Governor Talauega E. V. Ale, Senate President Tuaolo, Secretary of Samoan Affairs, Paramount Chief Mauga, together with members of the cabinet. Also in attendance was the Consul General of the Independent State of Samoa Fata K. Brian who also made a generous donation.
ASG further extended a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to their relief effort. “Your generosity has brought hope and assistance to the families of Lahaina, Maui, and reaffirmed the spirit of solidarity that defines our community,” the release concluded.
