StarKist hosts ASG at 60th Anniversary celebration

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Governor Lemanu P. S. Mauga used the occasion of the StarKist 60th Anniversary celebration party this past Friday to look ahead to the future and relate how the territory’s biggest private employer has had a profound impact on the lives of American Samoans.

"Many of our leaders today are the proud products of parents who toiled tirelessly at StarKist,” Lemanu said and he also expressed deep gratitude for the distinctive recognition StarKist provides to American Samoa.

"We take immense pride in seeing the flag of American Samoa displayed on every tuna can. Thank you for recognizing the fruit of our labor, and serving it worldwide.

"Our earnest plea to the CEO is to continue keeping StarKist on our shores, to ensure that American Samoa remains an integral part of the StarKist family. Through our partnership with StarKist and the hard work of our people, we have elevated American Samoa to where it stands today."

Amidst the shared history of challenges and triumphs, StarKist has exemplified resilience in the face of adversity. In the aftermath of tragedies, both natural and man-made, StarKist has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the American Samoa community and its dedication to overcoming obstacles, the governor said in a press release issued by his office.

Governor Lemanu was joined by First Lady Ella at the event hosted by StarKist as a tribute to the partnership of the tuna giant with the local businesses, corporations, and the American Samoa Government.

The first couple was formally invited to attend the celebration by StarKist Co. President and Chief Executive Officer Chae-Ung Um, along with Young Choi, Vice President and Chief Finance and Chief Operations Officer. The presence of these top StarKist executives pointed out the significance of the occasion and the strong relationship between ASG and StarKist, a press release pointed out.

As part of the 60th anniversary celebration of StarKist in American Samoa, StarKist Samoa General Manager Injoo Ha presented $25,000 of donations in equal amounts to five (5) distinct charities, as well as the LBJ Hospital. These contributions were made possible through the proceeds of the StarKist 60th Anniversary Golf Tournament held on August 19, 2023.

In a gesture of appreciation, Governor Lemanu and First Lady Ella hosted a luncheon at the Mauga o Alii Governor's Mansion, on Monday, September 4, 2023, in honor of StarKist’s corporate leaders. Governor Lemanu and First Lady Ella also presented traditional gifts to all the attendees, symbolizing the enduring connection between Starkist Samoa and the people of American Samoa.
