Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The long awaited Faleniu Road project as well as a related 'soak pit' are nearing completion and over the weekend, Tualauta Rep. Larry Sanitoa wrote to Reuben Siatu’u of the Department of Public Works (DPW) expressing appreciation for the job well done.
“First, on behalf of the residents of Faleniu, I would like to thank Governor Lemanu P. S. Mauga for his commitment and support to move forward with the Faleniu Road project,” Sanitoa wrote.
“With the rough terrain, deplorable landscape and flooding during every downpour, hundreds of families had no choice but to drive on this access road for years,” he said.
He congratulated the DPW team “for exceptional work on this Faleniu Road project. This was not an easy project as there were numerous and difficult challenges before and during the project.”

He also congratulated Basil Ake and Niu Construction — the project contractor —for a job well done. “No doubt, this is one of the best concrete built roads on the island,” Sanitoa said, adding that he is also very pleased to see the near completion of the soak-pit construction — part of the road project.
The Tualauta faipule made a request, saying that the Faleniu village council and residents are requesting speed bumps to be installed immediately. He said there have been several near miss accidents between motorists and pedestrians —especially children due to speeding motorists.
In addition, he shared with Siatu’u that the village council and residents are requesting a 5 mph safety speed limit sign at the entrance area from the main road. “If there's a problem, we just need your approval, I can purchase the signs and have the contractor install them,” he said.
In conclusion, Sanitoa said: “Thank you again for the great work on this project and for the many completed and pending road and drainage projects throughout the Tualauta District.”
