Valerie Faasi’u Simamao with her grandmother Lotonuu Faatafa Gago

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Miss Valerie Faasi’u Simamao wishes her classmates a “happy graduation” on the day of their graduation was the first thing she wanted to say.

Valerie was among the graduating class of 2023 and she was excited about her personal  historic morning in her educational journey.

She was one of the 76 that graduated from Faasao Marist High School  — Class of 2023 — and she did it with High Honors, Honors, Second Honors and as a National Honor Society member during last Saturday’s Commencement Ceremony held at Fatu-o-aiga Hall, Ottoville — on the grounds of the Holy Family Cathedral.

The Hawai born graduate didn’t say much when asked for comments but nodded to her grandmother to speak on her behalf.

Lotonuu Faatafa Gago, from the village of Se’etaga was extremely excited and willing to share the life of her granddaughter.

“She was born in Hawaii and was brought to American Samoa while she was a baby and I raised her from then on.”

Grandmother Lotonuu said, “Torise who is number three of my daughters residing permanently in Hawaii with her family, is Valerie’s mother.”

“Now that my Valerie has managed to complete her High School, the next step is for her to attend the American Samoa Community College at Mapusaga.

The grandmother is “happy to continue funding” her granddaughter’s education, which will now be college — as she looks forward to seeing her reach her dream successfully of becoming a teacher or a doctor.
