Fitiuta, AMERICAN SAMOA — “Safety first!” says Port Administration Department (DPA) as McConnell Dowell, Young Electric Solutions and PIOA Consultants teams were getting their airfield safety induction before construction starts on Fitiuta Airport. The safety induction was conducted by Airport Safety Manager Aluese Tei.
Port Administration director Falenaoti Loi-On Fruean and the says Port Administration Department (DPA) hosted a public meeting recently for the village of Fitiuta, to notify and discuss the Fitiuta Airport Lighting Project, with construction started earlier this month.
This project will renew all the airfield lighting and navigational aids on Fitiuta airport, which will allow safer operations during poor visibility weather and night operations. “This is especially vital in times of emergencies,” according to DPA.
The project is funded by the US Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvements Program for a total of $2.5 million. The design was completed by PPG Consultants and Woolpert Inc.
Construction is carried out by McConnell Dowell Amerika Samoa and Young Electric Solutions, with Construction Management by PIOA Consultants.
