Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Governor Lemanu P. S Mauga confirmed during his State of the Territory’s Address that one of the four super-Alia boats is currently being built, and the Department of Commerce (DOC) aims to deliver it in time for Flag Day 2023.

“There will be a small fleet of 4 modern and upgraded catamaran commercial fishing vessels that will support the growth of our local fishing fleet.

“One vessel will function as a training platform while the other 3 vessels will function as business incubators,” the governor said.

According to Lemanu, the project outcomes include improved diversification of our economy, creation of jobs and economic opportunities, workforce development, and the long-term sustainability of the fresh fish industry.

The boat builder contractor is Armstrong Consolidated Inc.

In 2020 the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded $4.4 million for the Super Alia project, which the previous Administration had touted as the “future commercial fishing vessel” that can go further out at sea and stay out longer fishing then the current traditional alias.
