Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — This Wednesday, October 19 the American Samoa Visitor’s Bureau (ASVB) brings storytelling to the public.

Taking place at the ASCC Multipurpose Center from 12-1:30 PM special guest speakers are Dr. Aaron J. Salā, Ms. C. Makanani Salā, & Ms. Tolua Samifua!

The general public is invited and all are welcome to attend.

BACKGROUND

Storytelling is the greatest superpower that Pacific islanders hold. Our relationship to the land, to the ocean, to our histories and to each other has provided for us an infinite number of resources that, in turn, have helped us to make sense of the worlds in which we live.

In the contemporary era, Pacific island representation has so often been appropriated in ways that are not authentic to Pacific ways of knowing and of being. Considering the notion that authenticity is a multilayered and complex concept, we hold that to “be authentic” is a both an individual and a collective responsibility.

Through this engagement, audience members will be challenged and empowered to reimagine how their stories can be told, to level-up their storytelling skills and to reimagine how their stories can be told—through video-game, motion-story design, and through interactive experiential learning.
