Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that the next round of data from the 2020 Island Areas Censuses would be released in October 2022.

The new data will be released as a Demographic Profile and will provide the four U.S. Island Areas — American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands — with a set of basic demographic, social, economic and housing characteristics for each island area and limited, lower levels of geography.

Additionally, the Insular Areas Demographic and Housing Characteristics File is planned for release July 2023 and provides detailed demographic, social, economic and housing characteristics for a variety of geographies.

The Census Bureau had previously released population and housing counts for each of the U.S. Island Areas in October 2021.

As previously reported by Samoa News, the 2020 Census for American Samoa shows population count in 2020 decreased by 10.5% from the 2010 census. As of April 1, 2020, the territory’s population was 49,710, down from the 2010 Census figure of 55,519.

For the housing unit count, Census data shows 11,807 housing units in 2020, representing an increase of 7.7% from the 2010 Census housing unit count of 10,963. (See Samoa News edition Oct. 29, 2021 or online — www.censusbureau.gov - for specific data breakdown including data in villages.)
