Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Public Safety is appealing to parents of graduates throughout the territory to be vigilant during graduation season over underage drinking and illegal drug use.
“The Police are conducting the normal traffic enforcement, but we can only do so much and it is an effort that requires the assistance of parents.
“With graduation this week, we appeal to parents to look after their children, don’t let them drive [when drinking] and make sure that parents who are driving understand defense driving in any case of an accident,” said Deputy Commissioner Terry Letuli.
In an interview with Samoa News, Letuli said with the possibility of traffic accidents this week, parents need to make sure not to let their child behind the wheel.
“Road safety is very important at this time of year.
“Again parents need to be vigilant, the last thing we want is to lose the life of any graduate — let alone anyone in the territory.”
A senior police officer in the traffic division said that during this time of year, no doubt graduation is a milestone in a young person’s life – a time filled with great anticipation and celebration.
“There will be alcohol and I urge parents to make sure they know where and what their child is up to.
“If you are a parent, relative, or friend of a graduate getting ready to celebrate, make sure they know how serious the matter is and that they should not participate in any of these activities.
“And just as important, make sure they don’t let their friends partake either.”
Adding that it is a challenging, sometimes uncomfortable discussion for many adults to talk to teenagers about – especially on the subject of illegal drugs and underage drinking – but it is both responsible and vital.
“And it is a far easier conversation than speaking to a police officer after a tragic event.”
