Kanana Fou High School wins JROTC air rifle competition

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — And the overall winners are… the Kanana Fou Stallions!

The 2020 American Samoa JROTC Air Rifle Competition was held Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Konelio Pele US Army Reserve Center in Tafuna. Participating schools included Leone, Tafuna, Kanana Fou, Samoana, and Fagaitua.

According to Mark E. Time SFC (US Army, Retired) the JROTC Air Rifle course was designed to train and educate cadets on the responsible use of firearms through its gun safety training course in which cadets have to score a perfect 100% to make it into the Air Rifle team and receive an opportunity to compete against other local high schools during the annual air rifle competition.

More importantly, he added, the JROTC Marksmanship Program instills the following into the cadets: how vital it is to pay attention to rules and instructions; discipline; and working hard individually and as a team.

Last Friday’s event was hosted by the Director of Army Instruction, MAJ Malauulu, SFC Kodaro Ala, and the Stallions from Kanana Fou High School - the only local private school with a JROTC program.

The following are the official results of the competition:
1.    Kanana Fou HS

3.    Fagaitua HS
4.    Samoana HS
5.    Leone HS

The overall individual best shooter was Cadet Captain Josephine Saunia of Kanana Fou HS with a score of 232/300. Cadets shoot from 3 positions: the prone (lying down); kneeling; and standing with a possible 100 points per stance.
