This is the scene along the Nu’uuli/Airport road where fallen banana trees along with large broken branches from trees sit on top of electric wires last Saturday morning. There were similar scenes at other areas of Tutuila impacted by Tropical Storm Gita. [photo: FS]
One of the hardest hit buildings during Tropical Storm Gita is Paea’s in Nuuuli, across from Family Mart. Certain areas in Nuuuli, along the main road, seem to have the most damage from the storm, causing businesses without generators to remain closed, awaiting American Samoa Power Authority repairs for power and water. . The Veterans Memorial Stadium signage and ticket stall were upended from the strong winds during Tropical Storm Gita that hit American Samoa on Friday — but the stadium itself, at least its roof(s) seem to be in good shape — they’re still standing. This is typical of the damages throughout the island, where some buildings looked untouched, while others were utterly destroyed, or severely damaged. Trees also suffered, with many uprooted and laying in yards or on top of homes or buildings. [photo: THA]
The business building which housed Brenda’s Photoshop, along with a barber shop and laundromat in Nu’uuli is seen in this photo in the aftermath of strong winds from last Friday’s Tropical Storm Gita. Strong gusts of wind, pounding sweeping rain laid waste to roofs of homes and businesses, as well as trees — banana, papaya, mango, breadfruit, decorative, etc. As of yesterday, certain areas continued to have no electricity, nor water — but ASPA is working hard to bring these areas back on line, according to reports. In the meantime, no related deaths have been reported — thanks to God. [photo: Leua Aiono Frost]
