Australia to support ‘micro-canneries’ in Pacific

Remote island nations in the Pacific could soon see the creation of locally operated 'micro-canneries' as part of an effort to reduce their reliance on fish imports.

The Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA), a group of eight Pacific states that collectively supply 25% of the world's tuna, and Pacifical, PNA's marketing company, are spearheading the micro-canning initiative.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has said it will invest AUD 4 million ($3.14m) across 16 development projects in the region, including the micro-canning project.
