Tuna Processors prez meets with Lt Gov to explore economic strategies

Lt. Gov. of American Samoa La’apui Talauega Ale with Joe Hamby & Tuaopepe Fata Li'o Jioko Asotau

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The President of Samoa Tuna Processors, Mr. Joe Hamby met with the Lt. Governor to explore strategies for maintaining the economic viability of the tuna industry in American Samoa. Their discussion focused on raising awareness of the current challenges facing the industry. Mr. Hamby's goal is to ensure that the American Samoa tuna industry remains competitive in the global market, both in fishing and processing.

STP is owned by Tri Marine, which closed its cannery in the Territory in 2016, after citing that unforeseen factors lead to it becoming unviable to continue to keep its doors open.

StarKist Samoa has been operating the STP facility after it entered into a 10-year sub-lease agreement with STP on May 25, 2018 to use the STP facility to support Starkist cannery's operations in American Samoa that are located adjacent to the STP facility.
