Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A dedicated educator at Tafuna High School, Elisaia Ma'ilo, has been named the 2025 American Samoa Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year.
With eight years of service as a U.S. History and three years as an AP U.S. History teacher, Ma'ilo’s passion for history and his commitment to his students have earned him this prestigious recognition.
Ma'ilo, who teaches both U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. History at THS, has built a reputation for making history come alive for his students. His engaging teaching methods, paired with a deep knowledge of American history, have made him a favorite among his students and a respected figure among his colleagues.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, which presents the award annually, recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching American history, foster student engagement, and inspire a deeper understanding of the nation's past. Ma'ilo’s ability to challenge his students while nurturing their curiosity and analytical skills stood out among a competitive field of nominees.
"It's an incredible honor to be recognized for something that I love doing," said Ma'ilo, reflecting on the award. "Teaching history isn't just about dates and facts; it's about understanding the stories that have shaped who we are today. I want my students to think critically and to appreciate the history that has influenced our lives in ways they might not have realized.”
His recognition shines a light on the incredible educators he works with, a community where history education is vital to preserving cultural heritage while preparing students for the future. He takes pride in the collaborative work being done at THS.
“I’m so grateful to work with an amazing staff, our symbiosis really allows our students to thrive. Our supportive administrators guide us to be our best. It’s a great honor to be a Warrior,” he noted.
Mr. Mailo has a strong academic and cultural foundation. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s in Organizational Leadership, reflecting his dedication to growth. After earning his teacher certification through the DOE/ASCC Certification program and successfully passing the Praxis exam, he has shown dedication to improving education for the young people of American Samoa.
Originally from Hawai‘i, Elisaia moved to American Samoa 13 years ago, reconnecting with his roots. He is the son of Taai Mailo of Fagatogo and the late Sose Mailo of Iva, Savai’i — heritage that grounds his identity and values. His journey reflects a deep commitment to both learning and serving his community.
"I think it's essential for students here in American Samoa to connect with history, especially as it relates to their own lives. U.S. History isn't just about what happens on the mainland; it’s about understanding how the broader history of the United States impacts us as a people," Mr. Ma'ilo explained.
THS principal, Tutuila Togilau, expressed immense pride in Ma'ilo’s achievement. “Elisaia is not only an outstanding teacher, but he is also a mentor to many of his colleagues and students alike. His ability to connect with students on a personal level while pushing them to excel academically is what makes him stand out.”
As the American Samoa Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year, Mr. Ma'ilo will receive a monetary prize, along with a collection of resources to enhance his teaching.
For Mr. Ma'ilo, the recognition is a reflection of God’s faithfulness. "I am thankful to the Lord because He is the reason I’m able to do any of this. Without Him, I cannot do anything. I’d like to recognize my late spiritual father Pastor Sualua Tauala who has been a major inspiration and prayer warrior to me. I am so proud to be named after him and to have been guided by his prayers throughout my life," he said.
