SPW Fitness launches Make American Samoa Healthy Again (MASHA)

4 Pillars of healthy lifestyle

Utulei, AMERICAN SAMOA — (September 11, 2025) Following the celebration of its 10th anniversary in July, SPW Fitness announces the launch of the “Make American Samoa Healthy Again” (MASHA) movement, a bold initiative to address the obesity crisis in American Samoa. With 93% of adults overweight or obese, 47% living with diabetes, and over 75% of deaths linked to heart disease (36%) and diabetes (39%) , MASHA aims to unite the community in a transformative fight for a healthier future.

The MASHA movement is built on four key pillars, informed by a decade of experience at SPW Fitness:

1. Reclaim Our Roots Through Nutrition: Recognizing that 80% of health is tied to diet, MASHA promotes a return to traditional whole foods like taro, breadfruit, fa’i, fish, and fresh fruits that sustained our ancestors. SPW Fitness is advocating for policies to support this shift, including restrictions on sugary drinks in the Nutrition Assistance Program and mandatory nutrition education in elementary schools.

2. Move Together as a Community: Exercise accounts for 20% of health outcomes, and MASHA is launching monthly Fun Run road shows across villages, in partnership with other fitness providers. SPW Fitness invites villages and groups to host Fun Runs, offering support to make these events happen. Additional fitness activities will roll out in the coming weeks.

3. Unite Our Leaders for Change: MASHA calls for collaboration among government, churches, businesses, NGOs, and cultural leaders to shift societal norms and practices toward healthier living.

4. Empower Our Youth, Secure Our Future: With 44.6% of children affected by obesity, MASHA prioritizes mentoring youth through nutrition and fitness programs. The initiative also pushes for mandatory physical education (PE) and nutrition education at all school levels to foster lifelong healthy habits.

“We’ve seen families transform through small, sustainable changes at SPW Fitness,” said Paula and Michael McDonald, owners of SPW Fitness. “But this epidemic, far exceeding national averages, demands collective action. MASHA is a call to every leader, business, church, and family to join us in making health our legacy.”

SPW Fitness invites the community to take action—whether by making healthier meal choices, starting a walking group, or advocating for MASHA’s pillars. For more information or to get involved, visit www.makeamericansamoahealthyagain.org or contact SPW Fitness directly.
