LBJ Tropical Medical Center officially reopens renovated Pediatrics Ward

Pediatrics Ward

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Tropical Medical Center officially reopening its Pediatrics Ward on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, “marking a significant milestone after more than two years of strategic closure,” according to the only medical center in the territory. “This temporary closure was a deliberate measure to fortify the hospital's readiness in the event of a potential COVID-19 outbreak, offering LBJ the opportunity to conduct extensive renovations and enhancements within the pediatric care facility.”

The Pediatrics Ward is now equipped with cutting-edge features, including five state-of-the-art negative pressure rooms. These rooms are equipped with advanced monitors and cameras directly connected to the nurses' station.

Serving a dual purpose, these negative pressure rooms function as isolation units to prevent cross-contamination and create an environment that inhibits the spread of airborne microorganisms.

“The completion of the renovations in the Pediatrics Ward, including the installation of advanced negative pressure rooms, exemplifies our dedication to creating a secure and infection-resistant setting for our young patients.

“These improvements underscore our ongoing commitment to the health and welfare of the children in our community. We are excited that the renovation of the Pediatrics Ward is completed, and we persist in upgrading hospital facilities, recognizing the rightful expectation of our community to feel secure, at ease, and well-cared-for,” said Dr. Malouamaua Tuiolosega, Chairman of the LBJ Board of Directors.

In addition to the negative pressure rooms and washroom renovations, LBJ further announces upcoming major projects that further enhance their commitment to pediatric care.

The LBJ Tropical Medical Center has received a generous donation of $10,000 from McDonald's that will be used to install brand new TVs in the Pediatrics Ward, providing entertainment and comfort for young patients during their stay.

Of note, two isolation rooms within the Pediatrics Ward are now equipped with full bathrooms. “This upgrade is designed to provide comprehensive facilities for highly infectious cases, ensuring both the safety of patients and the ease of medical care,” LBJ states.

A dedicated room has also been established for wound care and burn patients, catering specifically to those who have suffered injuries in fires. This specialized room is equipped with advanced facilities to deliver optimal care and support during the recovery process.

Dr. Akapusi Ledua, Chief Executive Officer of LBJTMC said, “The contributions from McDonald's and the enhancements to our isolation and specialized rooms signify our commitment to going above and beyond in pediatric care.

”These projects will further elevate the standard of healthcare we provide to our community's children.”

Other  facility improvements still in progress at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center are the Dialysis Unit, Fiber Optic Technology, and a brand new 1000KVA Generator.

Samoa News understands the new generator was successfully tested on Sunday, and will soon come online.
