Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula has announced revisions to his nominations for members of the American Samoa Government Employees Retirement Fund Board of Trustees, reflecting a commitment to enhancing the governance of this crucial financial institution.
In his initial nominations, the governor selected Faoa Aitofele Sunia, Dr. Jean Hollister-Mareko, and local businessman Peter Crispin. However, in a recent letter addressed to legislative leaders, he outlined updated nominations that emphasize continuity and expertise within the board.
Faoa Aitofele Sunia has been nominated to serve a term until July 22, 2030, stepping in to replace Ueligitone Tonumaipea. Sunia, with nearly 60 years of public service, has an extensive resume that underscores his dedication to the community. His wide-ranging roles have included serving as an assistant attorney general, a District Court judge, Director of the Legislative Reference Bureau, Treasurer of the American Samoa Government (ASG), and Lieutenant Governor from 2003 to 2012. His legal expertise is further reflected in his previous work as legal counsel for the Retirement Fund, Election Office, and the Department of Public Safety. He currently serves as Legal Counsel to Lt. Governor Pulumalataala Ae Ae Jr.
Dr. Jean Hollister-Mareko, recognized for her extensive experience in education, has been nominated to replace Malemo Tausaga for a term set to expire on July 22, 2028. With over 30 years of educational service, including tenures at both the Department of Education and the American Samoa Community College, Dr. Hollister-Mareko possesses a deep understanding of the challenges and needs of employees. The Governor commended her exceptional analytical and organizational skills, which are expected to greatly benefit the Retirement Fund Board by bringing a balanced perspective to its deliberations.
The Retirement Fund Board also comprises Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, who serves as the Chairman, along with Toloai Ho Ching, Tony Togiai, and Loa Tuimavave Laupola.
