Finafinau brings environmental ed and action to Manu’a students

Finafinau advocates with Fitiuta students

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Demonstrating the importance of preserving marine ecosystems, mitigating plastic pollution, and embracing sustainable practices and environmental advocacy — environmental organization Finafinau traveled to Manu'a with the mission to protect our ocean, save our land, and empower our people.

The Finafinau team made presentations at Faleasao and Fitiuta Elementary Schools. And at each school, the team used interactive sessions on environmental stewardship through tree planting and marine debris related presentations to capture the attention of the young students. Through visually stimulating materials and engaging discussions, they explained the importance of preserving marine ecosystems, mitigating plastic pollution, and embracing sustainable practices.

"We believe that education is the key to fostering a generation of environmentally conscious leaders," remarked Stevie Iakopo, Finafinau’s National Student Council President. "By instilling a sense of responsibility and appreciation for nature at a young age, we hope to empower these children to love and care for our home.”

The impact of Finafinau's visit extended beyond the confines of the classroom, as students eagerly shared their newfound knowledge with their families and communities. Through collaborative efforts, the seeds of change were sown, fostering a collective commitment towards sustainable living and environmental preservation across the Manu'a islands.

As our Pacific Islands continue to grapple with the challenges of climate change and ecological degradation, Finafinau's dedication serves as a beacon of hope for a brighter, greener future.

The Finafinau team worked under the advisory guidance of Finafinau board members Elizabeth Fano and Dr. Sabrina Suluai-Mahuka, Finafinau members Stevie Iakopo, Mataio Suluai, Luisa Lauina, Lemalama Silafau, and Haylie Tuiasosopo alongside, DMWR Fishery Technician, Pemerika Mahuka,

Their educational outreach was made possible through funds under the Land Grant, USDA, and NYCALC (Jon Waterhouse mini grant marine site visit).

High schools that are interested in inspiring communities far and wide to embrace the call of environmental advocacy though Finafinau chapters in their schools can reach out to them on Facebook or Instagram.

Finafinau has big plans to continue advocating for youth, leadership in environmental conservation and climate action.
