Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Health's Environmental Health Services Division issued a notice over the weekend on its Facebook page regarding unclaimed ashes, in an effort to reach out to the family members of a person whose ashes have been in their care since December 16, 2020.
“These ashes were transported to our office five years ago, and so far, we have not received confirmation of their identity or the name of their family. We are hoping to connect with anyone who may have information, as these ashes were referred to us during the COVID-19 pandemic without any documentation.”
They also noted that if no one claims these ashes by October 5, 2025, they will proceed with final arrangements.
On Monday morning, the Department released an updated notice, which included the removal of the photo of the individual whose remains were under investigation.
This decision followed numerous calls from the public regarding the identity of the remains.
The Department of Health also took the opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to spreading awareness about this case. Their efforts are invaluable as we seek to honor the memory of this individual and facilitate a reunion with their family, helping them find closure during this difficult time.
