Disinformation on social media spreads to the territory

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A photo posted on the local Education Department Facebook page, is marked by ASDOE as “FAKE MEMO”, and apparently circulated over the weekend that public schools were to close yesterday due to severe weather conditions. The fake-information quickly circulated on social media.

ASDOE countered the fake information saying that someone posted a fake memo and it’s been shared on Facebook. Public schools went on as scheduled yesterday.

ASDOE said the fake memo didn’t originate from the department’s Facebook page. Someone appears to have changed the date of an official ASDOE memo that went out earlier this month.
