Cook Island welcomes delegates to two regional meetings

Gov. Lemanu P. S. Mauga welcomed to Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On November 3, 2023, Gov. Lemanu P. S. Mauga and a delegation of Pacific leaders arrived in Rarotonga, Cook Islands for the 52nd Pacific Island Forum and the 12th Polynesian Leaders Group meetings that began on Monday, Nov. 6 (Cook Islands time).

The delegation was greeted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration personnel and dignitaries from the Cook Islands government, where a short gate event was presented featuring live music performances, entertainment showcases, and a traditional blessing and prayer ceremony.

Cook Islands Deputy Prime Minister Robert Tapaitau delivered remarks alongside Her Excellency High Commissioner New Zealand Kairangi Samuela, who also welcomed the group.

A press release from the Governor’s Office noted that also welcoming Governor Lemalu was Phil Mao's granddaughter, along with a couple who had previously resided in American Samoa. The couple had dedicated their time to missionary work in Pago and also contributed to the operations at LBJ.

Among the leaders that traveled with Governor Lemanu was Tonga's Prime Minister, Siaosi 'Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni; as well as Tonga's Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Dr Viliami Uasike Latu. Also present was Tuvalu's Prime Minister, Kausea Natano; and Fiji's High Commissioner to the Cook Islands Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.
