Accident damages fire hydrant — it is designed to break apart

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A vehicle veered off the main road at the Nuuuli Airport Intersection, slammed into a fire hydrant and caused the unit to break and spew gallons of water into the air at around 3:30p.m. last Saturday. ASPA crew members were on site to make prompt repairs.

According to ASPA workers, a wet barrel type hydrant designed to break away in these types of situations is used. The bolts at the bottom of the barrel will break and only the hydrant is damaged while the waterline that is attached to it, stays intact.

This is ideal for a quick repair, said an ASPA representative, and minimizes disruption of service to customers. There was no interruptions in water services for the village last Saturday.
