Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Last Friday evening, the Gov. H. Rex Lee Auditorium was transformed into what has been described as a “world class” interactive art gallery, featuring local artists, both new and renowned.
Art enthusiasts, collectors, government officials and members of the business community gathered to participate in an event that excelled in transforming by interacting — le maimoa became the artists, musicians, foodies, authors, designers, dancers and performers, as well as participants in traditional knowledge that included re-telling of ‘le teine sa’ myths and realities.
Musicians played their favorites — Ulale, Henry Mika, Jarom Fuimaono, Henry Collins, Vaea Aetonu of the popular band Faiva, Afasene Tuimavave, artist Tasiaeafe Hiner with a special contemporary performance by Eterei Maiava accenting the tone of the evening.
Then, Chef Devynne Fuga showcased his food fusion all from locally sourced ingredients — palolo would have ‘starred’ if only it was the weekend of the palolo rising.
Then the spoken word by Tooa Matautia.
Models in some of Samoa’s traditional wear, intertwine with a weaving demonstration and a spectacular fashion show by Le Lagaali Couture by Isabella Au-mu Mageo.
Isabella showcased her ‘Telesa” Collection inspired by Taboo stories of the teine sa, while local artists — photographers, painters, carvers, weavers and more — celebrated their works with a viewing that progressed into a silent auction.
Who of us do not become overwhelmed when experiencing the accolades of creation as they become memories of inspiration shared with each other?
Jacinta Mailo, a member of the Moso’oi Team said, “We wanted to rekindle a love and appreciation for the arts in our communities and the Gala provided a platform for artists to showcase their talents while also empowering them to profit from their work.”
