Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Construction is ongoing for Phase 1 of the Lions Park Picnic/Recreational Project, a project funded by several sources and one of several park improvements by the Administration. Phase 1 includes upgrading existing shelters and building new ones as well as upgrading basketball courts and restroom facilities.
Petti Matila, director of Commerce, the department that funded the master plan for the entire area, explained that the overall goal “is to upgrade one of the main recreational parks or public spaces for the community.”

Aside from the construction that is currently underway, a living shoreline design is being finalized by coastal engineers who were on island last week. “A living shoreline is an eco-friendly option not only to prevent coastal erosion in the area, but also to protect the species within the surrounding area (land and sea),” said the director.
“We also plan to build an outdoor amphitheater within the park. The playground area for young children will also be upgraded.” Phase 1 is being funded by the Governor’s Office – Special Programs and by the Department of Parks and Recreation. DOC will fund part of the living shoreline and amphitheater.
